THIS is what responsible breeders do! And it doesn't stop here... responsible breeders take the health testing results and make informed decisions about breeding pairs in order to reduce or eliminate known health conditions within the breed.
Does it mean they produce perfect dogs every time? No, but it means they did what was within their control to reduce or eliminate any health conditions in their puppies. It means they used the knowledge and tools available to them to attempt to produce the healthiest puppies possible. And it means they put forth the funds and effort to avoid producing puppies that will have health conditions that could have easily been avoided.
If you want to learn more about the health testing required for this breed, visit https://ofa.org/chic-programs/browse-by-breed/?breed=EN. You'll see a list of health testing specific to each breed of dog, both 'required' and 'optional'.
Every breeder should be completing ALL required health testing at minimum on every dog used in their breeding programs (including stud dogs from other kennels). If they complete the optional health testing, that's even better.
Once the results are confirmed by OFA, the breeder can opt to post them to OFA. Posting them on OFA does costs a little extra but it ensures that a 3rd party has verified the results and displays them on a public database. This creates an OFA profile that is unique to that dog which includes the dogs details, health testing results and pedigree info (including health testing for relatives - if it was posted by their breeder).
If you are purchasing a puppy, please ensure that health testing has been completed according to the breed requirements for your breed at the link above. Ask the breeder for the OFA profile link to both parents and compare them to the list of required testing.
Note: if you are purchasing a mixed-breed puppy, then the health testing should be completed for BOTH BREEDS (or all of the breeds) that make up the mixed-breed puppy. Of course this gets really costly so sadly this rarely happens. It is very rare to find a mixed-breed dog that was produced from parents with all required health testing. And please do not believe that a DNA test is sufficient health testing, it is not!
Responsible breeders complete health testing... period.
If you are curious about the health testing that we complete, please visit our website www.pureheartspaniels.com/our-commitment . I think you'll be impressed to learn that we are committed to a high level of health testing in order to ensure that we are producing the healthiest puppies possible.
We post all our health testing on the OFA website for everyone to see.
We obtain CHIC numbers on all our dogs which confirms that ALL required health testing has been completed AND is posted on the OFA website.
You can find the link to the OFA Profile for each of our dogs and their CHIC number at www.pureheartspaniels.com/our-dogs
